A quiet interface over a city that remembers.
Apartments, furniture, containers and records survive a restart. What you leave in a room is there the next day.
Every action is checked before it happens. A door you have no key for doesn’t offer Unlock. Without a crowbar you don’t see Breach.
A citation names one of 37 offences, each with a fixed loyalty penalty. An officer cannot invent a charge, and you are told about every line written about you.
At rest the screen draws nothing. There is no clock on it; terminals tell the time, and the public address tells you when curfew is near.
Ninety minutes, curfew to curfew.
An hour of daylight and half an hour of night. The day is the same for everyone in the city, and the bar below is drawn to its real length.
- 06:00Curfew lifts and the ration cycle opens. One ration a citizen, nothing owed and nothing carried over.10 MIN
- 08:00The shift. Labour posts sign citizens on, the CIU packing line runs and the CWU trades are at their benches.20 MIN
- 11:00The café and the restaurant open, and stay open until curfew.
- 12:00The shift ends. Free time in daylight.30 MIN
- 18:00Dark. Free time in the evening.15 MIN
- 21:00The public address warns that curfew approaches.
- 22:00Curfew. A citizen outside a residential block is in violation, and the cameras say so.15 MIN
Most of the city works. Some of it watches.
Everyone arrives as a citizen. Union membership is applied for at the employment clerk, and it is a privilege.
A citizen carries an identity card, lives where housing assigns them, eats what the ration window gives, and keeps the curfew. Loyalty is recorded. Work is how it is earned.
Runs the cafés, the restaurant, the tailor and the newspaper.
Keeps the city working, from the packing line to the workbench.
The city’s first aid. When a unit calls for a medic, the CMU is paged to where it stands.
The city’s police. The Union does not recruit citizens; it consumes them. A citizen issued civil authority becomes a unit with a designation, and there is no way back.
The ladder and the divisionsTHE CITYNew arrivals come by train.
